Introducing my new baby (book)
You may have already seen my very excited photo above if you follow me on LinkedIn. Needless to say, I'm thrilled to have finally published and launched my latest book, Purposeful Cultures: A practical self-leadership guide.
My aim for Purposeful Cultures is to provide a different perspective on organisational cultures, and how we can change them. Usually when we think about cultures, we think about sweeping organisational interventions, but it starts from a very personal level.
Purposeful Cultures is a book about self-actualisation. It engages people in the question: “how do I really want to live and work, and how much am I living my life?” It's quite a deep existential question that goes back as far as great thinkers like Socrates and Plato. (I’m not trying to place myself in the pantheon of great philosophers, it’s simply a question that we’ve been asking ourselves for a long time!)
This book enables and encourages people to engage with self-reflection about deeply socialised values and beliefs that we hold about how we ‘should’ live. We all hold these ‘mental models’, and Purposeful Cultures offers an opportunity to reflect on them, and to recognise that we have a choice about whether we continue holding these beliefs or to let them go, change our thinking, and decide how we really want to live and work. To think about what is truly important to us.
People can adapt and change. This is the heart of resilience too. If we can adapt to changing circumstances around us, we build resilience as we learn to respond in different ways to different challenges. Facing the greatest challenges builds the greatest resilience and opportunities for growth and learning.
While this book is about change on a personal and organisational level, it is also about personal well-being. It’s about helping to find a work life that feels meaningful and purposeful to us. It's about helping people to explore their personal role in developing purposeful cultures (hey, that's the name of the book!).
