Change is hard …and natural

Change is hard, right?

Well, yes, but it is also a natural part of life, and it doesn’t have to be as hard as it seems to be within our organisations.

As living systems, we are each ‘coupled’ to the environment that we live and work in.

That environment comprises:

  1. The natural world as though it was separate from us, but in fact, is the Earth that we evolved from and with.

  2. The cultures we were raised in as children, the societies we have visited and learned from as adults and the organisational cultures we work within.

  3. The different institutional structures and systems that have emerged from our societal cultures are submerged in the pattern of collective unconscious assumptions about how the world works and should work.

We are connected to all these elements of life and work. As these elements change, each person (usually subconsciously) constantly asks themselves:

  • What am I learning?

  • How is that relevant to the most important things to me?

  • Does it make sense for me to change (adapt)?

If it makes sense to change – you do!

You might notice this process occurring very naturally in your private life. However, in our organisations, which have evolved over 200 years with the metaphor of being machine-like, some unconscious assumptions and beliefs have resulted in organisational structures and processes that hinder change from emerging naturally.

My research and practice over the last +20 years have demonstrated how removing these structures is the way to liberate changes naturally. Some of these structures are tangible processes that impose undue control, and some are intangible beliefs we each carry inside our own minds.

As the world becomes even more disruptive (ask any futurist), we need the capability of ongoing change for our organisations to be adaptable, resilient, and regenerative places.

We need everyone to lead changes that make sense for your organisation’s vision, purpose and values.

To keep up and thrive in this rapidly emerging disruptive world, you need everyone to be capable change leaders in their own spheres of influence.

Certainly, every manager needs to be a capable change leader.
